Resident Advisor - RA Poll Top 50 Tracks of (2016)

The 2016 polls come to a close with the RA staff tracks of the year meeting in the huge amount of tracks on each day and the mood, and maybe the same attitudes and beliefs! These are the tracks that defined our year. Some are bombs that fuelled house parties, club nights and home mix sessions among friends; others held busy dance floors in a trance with crafty grooves, bleeps and blobs. There are ambient and experimental sketches enjoyed in cosy living rooms or under blankets, the kind of tunes that only seem to get put on when there's no one else around. There are plenty of songs, too less about beats and more about melody and strong, emotional themes. Wherever the tracks on this list were heard, they stayed with people long after the lights went up, the laptop was closed or the headphones were put away.

Best Of Superordinate (2016)

Superordinate Music continues it's incredible first year with a new single from Michael A this week. The Belarus producer's phenomenal campaign has been much talked about. After countless chart, club and radio supported releases from Hernan Cattaneo and Guy J, Michael then launched his Genesis Music imprint which has quickly become one of this year's best new progressive house labels. Now for his Superordinate debut Michael delivers two excellent cuts. The lead track on the release Distance has been making waves in the underground over the last month. Rugged stabs and spiralling vocal gates carry the track, which slowly evolves into a wondrous blur of melodious colour.

60s Jazz (2017)

Most of the titles on this album are derived from Thelonious Monk's vast catalog of bop standards. Both co-leaders are at the peak of their respective prowess with insightful interpretations of nearly half a dozen inspired performances from this incarnation of the Blakey-led Jazz Messengers. Monk counters with some powerful and inspired runs that are sonically splintered by the enthusiastic if not practically percussive chord progressions and highly logistic phrasings from the pianist. As usual, vibraphonist Milt Jackson and pianist John Lewis also have plenty of solo space, and bassist Percy Heath is perfect in support. Since drummer Connie Kay was ailing, Mickey Roker fills in on seven. With the exception of Django, and Bags Groove, the music sticks to bop standards rather than MJQ standbys.

Glitch Hop Essentials (2017)

Glitch hop is a subgenre of glitch that fuses hip hop elements. While it does not necessarily include rap, it fuses funky hip hop beats with glitchy effects and techniques such as beat repeaters, repeating, chopping and bit crush reduction. Sources of glitch sound material are usually malfunctioning or abused audio recording devices or digital electronics, such as CD skipping, electric hum, digital or analog distortion, bit rate reduction, hardware noise, software bugs, crashes, vinyl record hiss or scratches. While it was initially based on fusing the lo-fi aesthetics of early hip hop and glitch, it has increasingly taken influence from the maximalist, bass-focused sound of dubstep and the drum and bass subgenre neurofunk with whose neurohop variant it shares many similarities.
